Sliding Door Progress!

The sliding doors are almost finished!

Here's the link that describes how I made the doors if you'd like to make your own.

DIY Sliding Loft Doors

Closed Doors

During construction, I’ve learned a few important lessons:

1.    I am not good at estimating the weight of objects, for example 4’ x10’ doors
2.    Predrilling before inserting wood screws is very important

3.    Predrilling with the right size drill bit before inserting wood screws is even more important
4.    Precise measurements are important
5.    It is difficult to obtain precise measurements while standing on a ladder and holding a   seven foot long piece of metal over your head with one hand
6.    Nothing is plumb or square
7.   Things I make really aren’t very plumb or square

8.   There is a difference between caulk that is paintable and caulk that is sandable  and paintable and confusing the two may lead to troubles
9.   Things generally take twice as long as I planned

10.  It really helps to have smart friends
The doors aren’t perfect. They do not slide perfectly, but they do slide.  They could use some sanding and another coat of paint, but they’ll do for now.  Just add them to my list of things that could use some progress.  Now I’m ready to move on to my next project, or just really tired of this door project.
I think I’m going to attempt to make some picture frames from the leftover wood scraps.

Did you know that you can cut glass at home with a few simple tools?
Wish me luck.

  2. I must say you’ve done a pretty good job on your DIY sliding door! It looks nifty and cool! It suits your space pretty well and gives it a touch of sophistication, especially with the lighting. But I would suggest that you put some color on your door by painting it with lively colors. It will break the monotony of the space, and it will make your door pop!

  3. Great job! What I love about sliding doors is it’s a good space saver. Since this kind of door doesn’t require extra space to open, the space surrounding the sliding door can be utilized for other things.
