DIY: How to Make a Colander

1.  Heat one stove eye on high for approximately two minutes or the amount of time it takes to make stove top pop corn.

2.  Turn off stove.

3.  Place plastic bowl on top of stove eye.

Place bowl here.

4.  Remove bowl.  Your new colander is ready for use!

  1. Did you do that on purpose or was this an accidental DIY colander? I have a feeling it's the latter. Was the burned plastic hard to get off the burner? Did it smell horrible-- like burning plastic has that chemically smell? Was the popcorn worth it anyway?

    1. Oh this was definitely accidental. It didn't actually smell that bad either. I didn't even realize that I'd burned the bowl until I picked it up and all the popcorn salt started streaming out of the bottom of the bowl. I was totally confused for a second. Cooking is hard :)

    1. I try but I'm pretty sure I'm way more awesome when I'm with you!

  3. As you can see, the colander offers far superior drainage and aeration. I have deliberately chosen a large colander and tiny bonsai pot to give the bonsai pot an advantage. If both were of the same size, colander's victory is guaranteed. It would not even be a contest. The size extremes also highlight how much more aeration and drainage happens in a large colander than even a tiny bonsai pot !
